How to Explore Your Skin Undertone

Undertone describes how certain colors relate to your skin's appearance. It is useful for choosing colors near your face, but a single selfie or one quick test cannot settle it with certainty.

Start analysis

Compare colors in consistent light

Use indirect daylight and hold two fabric colors near your face: one clearly warmer and one clearly cooler. Keep the camera, distance and exposure the same. Look for changes in overall balance rather than trying to read a color code from the skin itself.

Repeat the comparison

Try several pairs of colors on different days. Makeup, sun exposure, dyed hair and phone image processing can all shift the result. If both directions work, a neutral or flexible palette may be more practical than forcing a warm/cool answer.

Turn observations into a palette

Undertone is only one dimension. Depth, clarity and facial contrast also affect an outfit or makeup color. Use your analysis as a set of options, then keep the colors that you enjoy wearing in real conditions.

Frequently asked questions

Can veins or jewelry determine undertone?

They may offer clues, but lighting and personal preference can change what appears flattering. Compare several real fabric colors before deciding.
